A thousand years ago, I was a carpenter. When I was still new at the job, I did something very stupid. (I know, can you believe it?) I’d been so eager to please, wanted so desperately to do well….
So anyway, I did this thing, really really dumb, and the bossman, he just reamed me. He yelled approximately forever, and when he was done I was destroyed.
I had a friend on that job, Eric, someone I really looked up to. He looked me over with a sigh and a shrug, and said, “Not the end of the world, man. It’s just, some days you’re the hammer and some days you’re the nail.”
And that was my introduction to this little bit of carpenter wisdom. Eric was a good man to have around.
